About Daniel O'Donnell

Having studied architecture, my main interest lies in the built environment primarily the cityscape. Every city contains layers of different architectural styles and periods giving each a unique fingerprint. I’m interested in the relationship between these layers and mapping the elevational aspect of streets and vistas to create measured depictions of the subject matter, carefully using line to draw out the three dimensional nature of façades. I’m currently focused on Edinburgh’s architectural heritage producing artworks that cover broad panoramas, with others focused on the smaller details.

By way of a broader context, I returned to third level education as a mature student graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2011 with a post graduate diploma with distinction in architecture following a 1st class honours degree. In that year, I won the RIAS Scottish Student Drawing Prize and was commended in the A+DS Silver Medal Award for best Scottish student. This followed a successful and award winning career as a commercial interior designer where I also honed my drawing skills as an architectural illustrator. My work has been published in a number of the architectural on-line journals including the AJ and BD Online, and I’ve also had selected drawings exhibited in galleries throughout the UK including the RA, the RSA, and the Lighthouse in Glasgow.
