Ian Renwick is a Scottish artist living in Balerno, he works from his studio in St Margarets house near meadowbank.

He normally paints in oil, acrylic,or gouache. Subjects include trees, mountains, harbours and townscape.

The painting knife probably features more than the brush in most of his paintings. This enables him to capture the mood and atmosphere of the scene being painted. He prefers to paint “en plein air” when possible, weather permitting. This can be very rewarding to capture the tones and colours of the scene but can be a challenge with the varying Scottish climate.

Changing seasons and the light reflected in the landscape are a constant inspiration. Colours and tones change, as well as the shadows, depending on the time of day.
