Colinton Arts Newsletter – August 2022

Rosie Playfair is a Scottish artist who graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Graphic Design.
Her stylised and varied subject matter covers everything from landscapes to portraits and still life to abstract. For her own enjoyment she likes to paint/draw nudes and trees – sometimes even together. A successful PR consultant, Rosie was persuaded by an artist friend to revisit he artistic side. Subsequent praise and demand sparked a renewed passion for both drawing and painting.

Stephanie Pijper is an award-winning Scottish artist who graduated Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Fine Art Education.
She travelled through Europe, exploring her passions and artistic identity further and living for some years in Spain and The Netherlands. She enjoys a loyal collector base and her work has been exhibited throughout the UK. Inspired by the secrets of antiquity and nature, Stephanie’s work has exquisite attention to detail and themes of rebirth can be found throughout.

Treasure and the Trees
When a tree falls in a forest, and there’s no-one there, does it make a sound? The silent majesty of trees might argue against it. But the trees and the woodlands painted by Rosie Playfair have their own unique identity, sounds and images. In her semi-abstract style, Rosie gives us glimpses of the stories hidden in the woods. From family walks which echo the impressionists to lonely cabins half concealed behind idealised nature scenes. These are some quite remarkable pieces well-worth investigating.

Compare that with the beauty of remaking the broken and you’ll get a good idea of the sense of renewal in Stephanie Pijper’s kintsugi paintings. With breathtaking precision, Stephanie illuminates for us the physical renovation and renewal of broken porcelain with threads of gold. These exceptional pieces take the art of still life and combine it symbolically with new life as we observe the old made stronger by the new.

We’re excited to welcome you into our world of Woodland & Wonders. Do come and see these astonishing painted stories and works of renewal for yourself – For an invitation to the Private View on 7 September, please click here. Alternatively, feel free to browse through all our other artists online.
