Stories From The City, Land & Sea
Colinton Arts is proud to present Stories from the City, Land and Sea, an in-depth exploration of the work of two innovative Scottish artists – Jason Cordingley and Anne Skinner.
Each of them brings something special to capturing and examining the beauty of the natural world and the built environment. No-one can paint every blade of grass or fleck of stone, but filtering that beauty through through the eyes of two terrific artists helps bring us closer to the essence of nature and the grandeur of Edinburgh.
Both Jason and Anne build their worlds on emotion and the impact of light. In carefully layering texture and tone, they drive drama into the heart of each work.
Jason’s expansive vistas are sultry skies and perfect panoramas. He captures the thrill of nature and the coruscating quality of light on the landscape.

Anne paints her influences directly onto board. She sees and captures desolate beauty, vast skies and expansive sandscapes, where shimmers of sun break through a threatening sky.

We invite you to close your eyes and picture a perfect beach, or an Edinburgh scene. Open them again and take a new view of Jason and Anne’s interpretations of nature and form, of the city, land and sea. Join us as we uncover new stories, new tales. This exciting new exhibition starts Friday 20 May and runs until Saturday 18 June in the gallery and online. We look forward to seeing you.
You’ve Been Framed!
Not only does a good frame enhance your art, it’s an integral part of the presentation of your piece in its best environment. How your art looks on your wall, in the context of the room is important.
One of our framing clients has kindly shared a few photos of how their pictures look now that they’ve taken their rightful places. Take a look at the image below and think not just about the art, but how the frame accentuates it and anchors it to the room:
Both the mounts and the frames themselves reflect elements of the style of this lovely bathroom. Together with the content of the pictures, they present a coherent whole.
In another corner of the same room, you can see how frames, mounts, subjects, composition and position all neatly blend to present a slightly risqué yet entirely apt display.
If you need framing services for your paintings, photos or even collectibles, Colinton Arts are long established and trusted framers for Edinburgh and surrounding areas – you name it, we frame it!
Spring Into Action
Not had a chance to see our latest Exhibition yet? (Spring)time is of the essence! There’s just a few more days left to catch the lovely works we have on display. But act fast, these beautiful pieces are only with us until Saturday 14 May.
We’ve got 14 exceptional artists with close ties to Scotland each sharing their unique vision. Can you feel the weather heating up at last? We’re sure Madeleine Gardiner’s semi-abstract ‘Summer Thermals‘ will lift your spirits on a sunny afternoon.
Perhaps one of Leon Anderson’s dog portraits could be a quirky summer present?
But the pieces we really want you to see are by hugely talented Edinburgh artist Wendy Davidson. If we had to pick one of these, it’d be this compelling study of the city’s famous castle.
We also have energetic, roiling seas from Lindsay Dudley…
…and the cutest cow outside of the Royal Highland Show in ‘Hamish the Highland Coo‘ by Tess Dunlop.
We think there’s something here for everyone, so do take a look at our artists online, or pop into the gallery anytime. We’ll be happy to show you around.
